Klopp is asked: ‘What about Alisson’s performance?’ v Palace – his response is brilliant

Only one club and one goalkeeper have kept clean sheets in their opening two Premier League games this season – Liverpool and summer signing Alisson.

In stark contrast to last campaign, when they couldn’t stop conceding goals, the Reds have been solid at the back and cut out silly mistakes.

Perhaps that’s due to Loris Karius and Dejan Lovren being out of the team, but one way or another Liverpool finally seem to have solved their defensive issues.

And yet it could have been so different. According to Jurgen Klopp, he almost turned down Alisson because of the abuse Karius received after the Champions League final.

Klopp did eventually splash £66m to sign Alisson from AS Roma, though, and so far it’s been money well spent.

“We simply identified another keeper, who is better, and signed him,” said the German. “I didn’t tell Karius what he wanted to hear, but how it is.

“The Champions League final had nothing to do with us getting Alisson. Even if he had won it and Alisson would have been on the market, we would have still signed him.

“How the people reacted negatively to Karius after the final, tried to isolate him, almost made me not get Alisson and rather stick it out with Karius.

“But we had to be professional. Our job is to have the best players on every position. [Karius] is now 25, at an age in which keepers keep improving.

“All the best keepers make mistakes. But sometimes timing is important in life. If Loris makes a mistake now it isn’t cool. In eight years nobody will care. We are totally happy with him.”

Just like during the 4-0 win against West Ham, Alisson was phenomenal as Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners away to Crystal Palace on Monday Night Football.

Alisson made a number of stunning saves, one of which from a free-kick, and now a funny clip from one of Klopp’s post-match interviews is doing the rounds.

In the video below, a reporter asks Klopp: “Could you talk a little bit about Alisson, good performance…” to which he turns to the camera and says: “What a goalkeeper!”

Just look at that smile and laugh – Klopp knows he made the right decision to replace Karius with Alisson, even if it required a huge transfer fee.
