Jurgen Klopp views Liverpool starlet as ‘the real deal’ – will replace first-team star in January

Jurgen Klopp views Joe Gomez as ‘the real deal’ at Liverpool and believes the defender is ready to replace Lucas in the first team, according to reports.

The 19-year-old hasn’t featured for Liverpool since October 2015 and has been sidelined with cruciate ligament and Achilles injuries.

Lucas, meanwhile, has started only three Premier League games this season and ESPN claim that Liverpool are ready to grant the Brazilian a move to Inter in the January transfer window.

But Klopp’s decision to allow Lucas to move on is based on his view that Gomez is able to command a place in the first team once he returns to full fitness.

The ex-Charlton man has revealed he is back to full fitness and raring to go after counting down the days on his home-made injury calendar.

“Towards the end, the final two months, I bought a calendar and put it on my wardrobe and I wrote out every day and ticked off every box,” Gomez said.“With the nature of my Achilles injury, I could write out my distances and I was checking off each week – ‘This week I finished 5k, this week I finished 8k.’“That was massive for me because I was counting down and looking at the week itself, instead of focusing on a long-term goal.

“That helped me massively.”

Gomez was signed in a £3.5 million deal from Charlton Athletic in June 2015 but has only made seven first-team appearance for Liverpool.
