LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp has entered the race to sign Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, according to shock reports in Spain.
The Reds are looking to strengthen their squad after selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142m earlier this month.
Bale is a long-term Manchester United target with Jose Mourinho a big fan of the Wales international. But Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Liverpool are ready to fight United for the signing of Bale.
The 28-year-old has struggled with injury throughout his time at the Bernabeu but Klopp is prepared to take a risk on him.
United could still go after Bale in the summer despite being on the brink of signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this January.
Klopp is ready to pay €100m (£88m) for the former Tottenham man as he looks to bolster his squad.
Earlier today the Liverpool manager said he would only invest in his squad this month if the right player became available.
He explained: “If something jumps in my face we will think about it.
“First of all we have to use the high quality players we have.
“[Adam] Lallana isn’t the replacement for Coutinho but he’s a fantastic player.”
Bale has struggled to make an impact at Real this season, playing just eight times in La Liga.
Liverpool are back in Premier League action on Monday when they take on Swansea.
The Reds could end the evening in second if results earlier this weekend go the right way for them.
