LIVERPOOL could have sorted their defensive woes if they’d snapped up Atletico Madrid’s 31-year-old Diego Godin and Juventus’ 33-year-old Giorgio Chiellini.
That’s according to Reds legend Steve Nicol who says his former club should signed some top-class defenders.
Klopp’s defence has been heavily criticised this season after a series of shaky displays. So Nicol was quizzed on what players he would sign to make up his ideal back line.
He picked Godin and Chiellini as centre-back partners but would be willing to throw in Chelsea’s Cesar Azplilicueta to make up a back three.
“If I was Klopp right now, it wouldn’t be (Sergio) Ramos and it wouldn’t be (Mamadou) Sakho,” he said. “I would stick Godin and I’d stick Chiellini together. Nobody is getting past those two.
“Yeah (Azpilicueta), he doesn’t make any mistakes, solid as a rock, solid as the day’s long. The two most important ones are the centre-back partnership. That is Godin and Chellini.
“I tell you what, nothing’s getting past them. If you want to throw Azpilicueta in, there’s your back three.
“If you’ve got Godin and Chiellini as your centre-backs, then you can have more attacking full-backs, as opposed to defensive ones.”
