Reds boss Jurgen Klopp took Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain off in the 89th minute of Liverpool’s clash with Southampton and replaced him with Henderson.
And the Liverpool midfielder, 29, walked onto the pitch and immediately signalled to Van Dijk, 28, that he should keep hold of the armband.
Fans posted the clip on Reddit and have praised Henderson for coming on and putting Liverpool’s victory ahead of taking the armband.
Absolute class from Jordan Henderson, who refused to take the captain's armband from Virgil van Dijk when he came on against Southampton. 👏🏾👏🏾— Adnan Riaz (@AdnanRiaz9) August 19, 2019

One fan said: “He’s coming on to organise his team who have just conceded a freak goal and look in danger of conceding another and dropping 2 points, no time for formalities, everybody knows who the captain is anyway.”
Someone else wrote: “And this kind of act is exactly why I love him. His main concern is always the TEAM and the performance. True Captain in every sense of the word.”
A third said: “This really shows his confidence! I approve.”
A fourth added: “Anyone who is a leader doesn’t have to show he is a leader.”
Henderson admitted last month that he wanted James Milner to lift the Champions League trophy with him last season, but the ex-Manchester City man refused to support his idea.
And Liverpool skipper Henderson has continued to receive praise as Adrian Durham recently claimed that he is a “better leader and a better captain” than Reds legend Steven Gerrard.
Liverpool held off a late scare from Southampton on Saturday to claim a 2-1 victory and secure the top spot in the table.
Sadio Mane handed the Reds a 1-0 lead before half-time and Roberto Firmino doubled their lead in the second half.
And while Danny Ings scored against his former side to hand the Saints a fighting chance, Liverpool took home all three points from their clash at the St Mary’s Stadium.
The Reds will be in action on Saturday when they host Arsenal at Anfield.
