Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has claimed that Liverpool are similar to boxer Amir Khan in that they are “chinny”.
Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle at St James’ Park yesterday, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having won just one of their last seven games in all competitions.
Barton feels that Liverpool are impressive in an attacking sense but lack conviction defensively.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Barton said: “They are so chinny, to use a boxing analogy.
“They throw a great array of punches, they are lovely going forward but they remind me of Amir Khan.
“They are just getting knocked out.”
Liverpool’s lack of defensive solidity has again been a major cause for concern this season, with the Reds having conceded 12 goals in 13 Premier League games.
Klopp can call upon an array of attacking stars, including Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge, but the German has so far been unable to make his side resolute at the back.
On Sunday it will be two years since Klopp was appointed as Liverpool manager and, while there have been some memorable matches during his time in charge, the German is still awaiting his first trophy at the club.
