LIVERPOOL aren’t likely to strengthen their defence – but Jamie Carragher has recalled one time they did.
When the Reds bought Sami Hyypia from Willem II for £2.6m in 1999, the Kop legend has revealed NO-ONE knew him!
But Hyypia went on to become a legend, playing more than 400 games for the club in his 10 years at Anfield.
Speaking on a Sky Sports programme celebrating his career, Carragher said: “I was at centre-back under Gerard Houllier when he initially arrived and after 12 months he made big changes to the club.
“He brought in two centre-backs at the time. I was 19 or 20, a kid really.
“Stephane Henchoz from Blackburn, who we knew well from Blackburn was a top defender.
“And then Sami Hyypia, from the Dutch league, who no-one knew anything about.
“Within two or three games we knew we’d bought a top, top centre-back.”
