MNF has been unmissable television for football fans for a number of years now, and it’s fair to say that Neville and Carragher are irreplaceable. Whenever one of them is missing, it just isn’t the same.
The Liverpool and Man Utd legends are the best double act among any set of football pundits on British TV and Sky Sports tend to get them on screen together for the biggest matches.
Following United’s 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux, we got to see Neville and Carragher’s annual early-season predictions.
And there were some eyebrow-raising shouts from both pundits.
Champions
Carragher: Man City
Neville: Man City
No surprises with this category. Both Carragher and Neville expect Pep Guardiola’s side to triumph again this season.
Top four
Carragher: Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal
“I think the firepower Arsenal have got maybe just edges them above Manchester United,” Carragher said.
Neville: Liverpool, Tottenham, Man Utd
“I think United will get into the top four,” Neville argued. “I think they’re stronger [than Chelsea]. I think Chelsea will struggle to score goals; centre-forward is a problem for them and losing Eden Hazard is just devastating for them.”
Top 6 challengers
Carragher: Everton
Neville: Everton
Everton have taken four points from their opening two games and have a squad that looks more than capable of challenging for a top-six finish.
Top goalscorer
Carragher: Harry Kane
Neville: Sergio Aguero
No Mo Salah, lads?
Teemu Pukki and Raheem Sterling currently lead the Premier League top scorer charts with four goals apiece.
Player of the Year
Carragher: Kevin De Bruyne
Neville: Kevin De Bruyne
Both pundits are expecting big things from Kevin De Bruyne, who has already provided three assists for City this season.
Young talent
Carragher: Mason Mount
Neville: James Maddison
“I think he’s outstanding,” Neville said about Leicester City’s midfielder. “He is a genuine creative player who will play a lot of games for England in the next 12-18 months. i think he’ll be in the European Championships squad. I think he’s fantastic.”
On James Maddison, Carragher added: “I think he’s the one player outside the top six, with my Liverpool head on, that I’d be looking at.”
One to watch
Carragher: Moise Kean
“Coming away from Juventus, we haven’t seen him play yet but he almost feels like a snip what Everton have paid for him,” Carragher said about Moise Keane.
Neville: Paul Pogba
“I think Paul Pogba could even be Player of the Year,” Neville said, much to Carragher’s disbelief. “That may seem like a bold statement [“a stupid statement,” Carragher interjected] but he has the potential to be the best player in this league.
“He’s the biggest personality in this league and, for me, Man Utd’s season rests a lot upon him in terms of how well he plays.”
