James Milner has sent the perfect response to Gary Lineker’s apology tweet

Liverpool may have brought in several expensive signings this summer but there’s no doubt who their player of the season so far is: James Milner.

Most would have considered the 32-year-old’s position to be under threat after Naby Keita and Fabinho moved to Liverpool but he seems simply undroppable right now.

Milner has started in all five of Liverpool’s opening games this season, winning them all and registering a goal with two assists for good measure.

But it’s been the energy, discipline, and all-around game that has really caught the eye from Milner – and his man of the match display at against Tottenham Hotspur was enough to bring an apology from Gary Lineker.

“I once tweeted that I didn’t really know what [James Milner] was on the football pitch,” he tweeted. “I do these days, and owe him an apology.

“He’s a terrific, versatile and intelligent footballer. My bad.”

Lineker echoes the thoughts of many who didn’t see Milner as anything particularly special when he left Manchester City for Anfield in 2015.

And in what has become par for the course for Liverpool’s vice-captain, he responded to the tweet in brilliant style.

“Thanks Gary,” he tweeted. “Always appreciated your role on the football pitch… and your punditry is now terrific and intelligent.”

He couldn’t really have put it any better, could he?

Milner has comfortably silenced any doubters he still had and it certainly looks like he’ll be an integral part of Liverpool’s season.

His efforts this season have allowed Jurgen Klopp to slowly introduce the likes of Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri to the side, while Fabinho is yet to register an appearance for his new side.
