How Liverpool fans have reacted to Dejan Lovren winning October’s POTM award

Liverpool’s Player of the Month for October is Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian defender, who is going through a torrid time on Merseyside, incredibly won a fan vote which closed on Wednesday night.

Lovren was hauled off on the 30 minute mark of the recent 4-1 defeat to Tottenham, after being at fault for both of Tottenham’s first-half goals.

The 28-year-old has been heavily criticised following his display and recently complained about receiving death threats on social media.

Lovren wrote on Instagram, “I don’t mind when people talk s*** about me, it’s more about them.

“But I cannot ignore when my family is threatened. I just can’t and won’t accept that.

The Liverpool club motto is “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and a sizeable number of Liverpool fans were desperate to prove this to Lovren.

October was not a good month for Liverpool, despite two comfortable wins over Maribor in the Champions League.

The Reds managed to win just one of their four Premier League fixtures and Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah was expected to win the Player of the Month award.

In an attempt to apologise to Lovren, Liverpool fans on social media decided to unite by hijacking the vote on the club’s website.

The voting closed late on Wednesday night and the Croatian defender had indeed pipped the perennial winner of voting competitions, Salah.

Since signing from Roma in a club-record £37m transfer, Salah has won the August and September Player of the Month awards.

Although it appeared that fans had united in a heart-warming way to show Lovren their support, much of the reaction on social media amongst Liverpool supporters was far from positive.

Liverpool fans voted for him to win the award but their reaction on Twitter suggests this was an awful decision.
