Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is unquestionably one of the best players in the world right now.
As much as Kevin De Bruyne was the deserving winner of the PFA Player of the Year award last season, there was good reason to think that Mane was Liverpool’s strongest player in 2019/20.
But just in case that was up for debate, Mane has reminded everybody of his unbridled talents since the restart, getting 2020/21 underway with a series of sparking performances for the Reds.
Mane’s strong start to the season
Mane might not have scored or assisted during the opening victory over Leeds United, but proved a constant threat throughout and amassed a very respectable 7.52 WhoScored.com rating.
However, it was the win at Stamford Bridge that really saw Mane announce himself this season, scoring a fine header and catching out Kepa Arrizabalaga to score twice against Chelsea.
Mane equalises vs Arsenal
Though, before we go any further, we have to acknowledge that plenty of fans on social media feel justly annoyed that Mane wasn’t even cautioned for an elbow on Kieran Tierney.
Anyhow, flailing limbs aside, Mane hardly put a foot wrong on Merseyside and set the wheels in motion for a third consecutive Liverpool victory in the league with a crucial equalising strike.
Mane arrived at the back post with the timing of a true poacher to tap in the rebound after Bernd Leno parried a fine shot from Mohamed Salah at the end of a mazy run.
Mane produces Anfield masterclass
It helped inspire Liverpool to a second just minutes afterwards with Andrew Robertson making up for his defensive error, before Diogo Jota put the cherry on top with a goal on his Anfield debut.
However, nobody could take away from Mane’s status as the MVP on the night, justly winning the Man of the Match award and producing some glorious statistics along the way.
The 28-year-old mustered five shots on goal, which is more than the entire Arsenal squad, while also completing two key passes, two tackles, winning three fouls and earning a 7.81 rating.
