Liverpool Under-23s boss Michael Beale has praised Joe Gomez‘s “fantastic” return in a 4-0 win over Burnley .
The 19-year-old defender has been sidelined since last October following a cruciate knee ligament injury, and is working on making his return to the first team with 90 minutes – as one of three centre-backs, alongside Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori – against the Clarets his first step.
Beale revealed Gomez, who joined the Reds from Charlton in July 2015, did not experience any repercussions on the pitch due to the injury and was pleased with his return in the second round of the Lancashire Senior Cup.
“It was fantastic to see Joe Gomez play his first 90 minutes in a long time,” Beale told the club’s official website.
“He came through it fine and he had a big smile on his face at the end which was great to see.”
Gomez made just five appearances for Liverpool last season, making seven defensive actions per game, before the injury ended his season ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s arrival.
The Reds are currently second in the Premier League – one point behind Chelsea – after going 10 games unbeaten this season ahead of their fixture against Sunderland at home on Saturday.
