Former manager is crazy for Liverpool star

Former Belgium manager Marc Wilmots has reminded Liverpool fans that we’ve got one of the world’s hottest striking talents on our books in Divock Origi.

Last season, the attacker came on leaps and bounds and eventually reached double figures for goals scored, but due to Liverpool’s excellent Premier League form, he’s been somewhat forgotten about – having not been given a single start in this competition in 2016/17.

“For me, he’s one of the best young striker talents for the future,” Wilmots told L’Equipe.

“He has everything: speed, technique, acceleration, knows where the goal is, right foot, left foot. But, Klopp is working with him, and taking his time. You need to let time do its thing.”

One of the problems (if you can call it that) of winning games, is that Klopp has no reason to change Liverpool’s starting XI. Origi has done nothing wrong at all, but equally, there’s no justification to put him ahead of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane or Coutinho right now.

The manager has urged Origi (and Daniel Sturridge) to remain patient and promised them that their opportunity will come. Before the New Year, we have eight fixtures, then a number of games in January as well – especially if we progress to the EFL Cup semis. There’ll be FA Cup matches to contend with, and remember – Mane is going to the AFCON – so that opens up another space in the team.

We’ll almost certainly see the forward start against Leeds in the EFL Cup next week and we can’t wait to see him in action again. He was sharp last time out, and we’re only sorry he’s not been more active this term. Klopp has high hopes for Origi though; that much was proven last term when he selected the youngster ahead of Daniel Sturridge against Borussia Dortmund.

His opportunity will come. Like Wilmots, we’re backing him to grab it with both hands.
