Barcelona star Javier Mascherano appears to have ended any chance of a move back to Liverpool by stating his ambition to rejoin River Plate. The 33-year-old is out of contract at the Nou Camp in 2019 but he’s slipped further down the pecking order this season.
Mascherano spent three years at Liverpool before moving to the La Liga giants but he’s regularly spoken about his ongoing affection for the Reds.
Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for the Argentine but Mascherano has suggested it’s another of his former sides, River Plate, that he wants to rejoin.
‘I believe I need to give a chapter of my career to River Plate,’ said Mascherano. ‘My problem is this is not guaranteed and I could be a prisoner of my own words, if the move does not happen I may be accused of lying.
‘But the truth is that this is what I have thought about, but I have a good relationship with the club’s president Rodolfo D’Onofrio and we speak regularly.
‘My future has nothing to do with money, I used to make my own decisions but now they’re done by my family, I cannot forget my kids and their situation. ‘What will I be doing in January or summer? I have no idea.’
