Fernando Torres shows his support to Liverpool in the title race with class birthday wish

Liverpool reclaimed top spot in the Premier League over the weekend with a narrow 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Sadio Mane continued his hot goalscoring form to break the deadlock before Ryan Babel pounced on Virgil van Dijk and Alisson’s mix-up to equalise.

Drawing would have only put Liverpool level on points with Manchester City, though, so Mane won a penalty and James Milner converted in the 81st minute to seal an important three points.

The Reds’ place at the top is only likely be temporary. City now have a game in hand and it’s hard to see anyone stopping them at the moment.

Simply put, Liverpool need to win every single one of their remaining Premier League fixtures to have any hope of winning the title.

What works in their favour is that they arguably have an easier run-in than City, who face trips to Tottenham and local rivals Manchester United in April.

Liverpool, meanwhile, still have to play Spurs and Chelsea from the top six but both games are at Anfield, so they’ll be the clear favourites.

It’s going to take a monumental push from the Merseyside club to end their title drought nonetheless and they’ve received some support from one of their old strikers, Fernando Torres.

Torres turns 35 today (Wednesday 20 March) and Liverpool tweeted the Spaniard wishing him a happy birthday.

And in response, Torres said: “Thank you Reds! All the best for the rest of the season, I’ll be cheering for you! Big times ahead!”

Class. Torres may have joined Chelsea from Liverpool for £50m in 2011, but he remains a fan of the club and the fans still adore him.

It’s messages like these that will spur Liverpool players on to make history and finally win the Premier League.
