Fans desperate for Klopp to sign in-form no.17 for Liverpool

Following yet another exciting afternoon of Premier League action on Saturday, Sunday arguably produced one of the games of the season at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth hosted Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on a sun-drenched afternoon on the south coast, with both sides in contrasting form. Eddie Howe’s troops had won just one of their previous five Premier League fixtures, while the Reds were unbeaten in their last 11, only losing the one game at Burnley back in August.

However, Liverpool’s excellent run was brought to an end in stunning fashion, as the Cherries beat them 4-3 thanks to three goals in the last 15 minutes. Sadio Mane and Divock Origi opened the scoring in the first half, before a Callum Wilson penalty halved the deficit. Emre Can reestablished their dominance soon after, but it wasn’t enough.

Klopp’s men fell apart defensively in the closing stages, as Bournemouth upped the ante through goals from Ryan Fraser, Steve Cook and an injury-time Nathan Ake strike; the latter coming courtesy of a Loris Karius mistake. With Joel Matip missing, Dejan Lovren and Lucas started at centre-back for the Reds, which left them at a disadvantage.

Liverpool badly lacked the solidity and presence that Matip provides to the back four, which sparked calls from fans for the club to pursue one of the Premier League’s most impressive defenders this season. Virgil van Dijk has continued to develop at Southampton under Claude Puel, leading to speculation over his long-term future.

With BBC pundit Robbie Savage leading the calls, Liverpool fans took to social media to discuss the Saints’ no.17 as a possible option. Here’s some of the best reaction on Twitter.
