Everton and Liverpool at centre of transfer plan: Deal to be done before deadline day

SOUTHAMPTON could raid Merseyside before the end of the month as they look to replace crocked Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch defender is expected to be out for up to ten weeks after suffering ankle ligament damage last weekend.

The 25-year-old had to be taken off early during the Saints’ 3-0 over Leicester on Sunday and they club are now looking to bring in someone new.

The Daily Mail claim Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Mamadou Sakho of Liverpool are both on Southampton’s radar.

Both centre-backs are up for grabs with Jagielka coming to the end of his Toffees career and Sakho being frozen out at Anfield.

Spartak Moscow defender Serdar Tasci is another name said to be interesting Saints boss Claude Puel.

Southampton sold Jose Fonte to West Ham for £8m last week meaning they are now short of options at the back.

Jack Stephens started Southampton’s EFL Cup semi-final triumph over Liverpool on Wednesday and impressed but Puel wants a more experienced defender as cover for the rest of the season.

Stephens will likely partner Maya Yoshida again when the Saints face Arsenal in their FA Cup fourth round tie tomorrow.

Puel will then focus on bringing in a new option before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
