Real Madrid are prepared to cash in on Liverpool target Marco Asensio to help fund a move to sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports in Spain.
The Spain international was linked with a speculative £158m move to Anfield before explaining he will consider his options after La Roja’s World Cup campaign.
‘Liverpool? When the World Cup is over, we will talk about that sort of thing,’ the forward said when asked about his future. Now I am focused on selection.’
Asensio and his club teammates with return to Real with a new manager in charge with former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui tasked with filling the void left by Zinedine Zidane.
Lopetegui’s arrival could be first of many changes at the club, with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale persistently linked with moves away from the Santiago Bernabeu while Neymar remains linked with a sensational return to Spain.
According to Sport, Real president Florentino Perez has not given up on ‘his dream’ of signing the man who left Barcelona for £202m just last summer.
The publication speculates a deal to bring the Brazil international could cost £264m and Real want to be prepared to make that offer if and when PSG come around to the idea of doing business.
While Real are no strangers to paying big fees having twice broke the world record transfer fee in the last 10 years, a move for Neymar would surely test even their financial strength.
With that in mind, Tele Madrid suggest Perez is open to the idea of cashing in on members of the current squad, with Asensio one possible candidate. Asensio, who is yet to start for Spain in the World Cup this summer making just one appearance off the bench, made 53 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 11 times and laying on six assists.
