Dortmund CEO hints superstar could leave in the coming years – and the Reds will be in the mix

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has revealed that a ‘super club’ enquired about signing England winger Jadon Sancho this summer, only to be told in no uncertain terms that he was not for sale – at least not yet.

Sancho scored 13 times last season in all competitions, assisting another 19, and while Watzke was adamant that he would not be allowed to leave this year, he did admit that stance will be reviewed every 12 months.

Via the Manchester Evening News, Watzke said: “A chief of one of the super clubs asked me back in spring if there was a chance [to sign Sancho] but I told him straight away he should forget about it and he never contacted me again.

“He knew I meant what I said. There aren’t many 19-year-olds with such potential.”

A sale at some point in the near future, however, was far from ruled out.

Watzke added: “When you have a player like Jadon Sancho, you must reassess the situation every single year. Everything else would not be honest.”

The Reds have been linked with a move for Sancho over the past few months, and he’s one of the names along with Kylian Mbappe that Michael Edwards could be targeting as elite stars who could push Jurgen Klopp’s squad onto the next level next summer.

Klopp said that this summer was not one for spending big, but that will not be the case every transfer window. The Reds could even have been the ‘super club’ that Watzke mentions.

The money was definitely there if the right player became available, but that did not turn out to be the case.

Dortmund would probably look for upwards of £100 million for the winger given his age and potential, but the Reds will be able to compete for his signature.

#Mbappe2020 might be a little too ambitious, though you never know in football. Sancho, however, would be a great addition, and a very realistic one as well.

Certainly, if the Reds can do a deal for Sancho, that should definitely be one that is pursued.
