Chelsea and Liverpool have been dealt a hammer blow after Faouzi Ghoulam agreed a new long-term contract at Napoli.
Ghoulam has made 151 appearances for Napoli since joining the club back in 2014 but the 26-year-old left-back was being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Reports suggest Liverpool made an approach for the Algerian defender which was immediately knocked back by the Serie A outfit in October.
It’s also understood that Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola have been expressing a strong interest in Ghoulam. However, on Tuesday afternoon Napoli announced that the Algeria international had signed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2022.
Ghoulam’s previous contract at the Stadio San Paolo was due to expire next June and Napoli responded emphatically to claims that his deal would not be renewed. ‘With regard to the “freeze on the renewal of the contract”, renewed until June 30, 2022,’ Napoli tweeted.
It’s believed Ghoulam now has a release clause of around £30million.
