Liverpool were in contact with Benfica regarding the transfer of Francisco Ferreira, but have decided not to go ahead with a deal just yet.
This is according to the player’s agent Ulisses Santos.
“I can’t deny that Liverpool was one of the clubs that approached me and, as well, Benfica, Ferro and myself, we understand it’s not to be the moment,” he told A Bola.
The 20-year-old centre-back plays for Benfica B at the moment, and despite impressing scouts across Europe, is clearly not the player we need right now to bolster our defence.
We already have 20-year-old England international Joe Gomez, who is clearly a level above Ferreira, wanting to play this position.
It’s been written a thousand times already, but Liverpool need a readymade centre-back, maybe two, bought at the next possible opportunity.
With Joel Matip injured, Liverpool’s first-choice pairing is Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren. They may have done well against Southampton at the weekend and they may do well tonight – but neither should be considered good enough long-term.
Jurgen Klopp decided not to buy a CB in the summer after failing to agree a deal with Southampton for Virgil van Dijk, which suggests we’ll try and go in for the Dutchman again.
If the Saints are in a relegation battle though there’s little chance of them selling the 26-year-old in January.
Hopefully Klopp will see the light and purchase an alternative.
After all, Mo Salah turned out to be an alternative to Julian Brandt, and look how well that’s panned out!
