3 defenders Liverpool really should have tried harder to sign in January – Agreed?

The rest of the season really does start here now January is out of the way.

We’re out of the FA Cup and League Cup and the transfer window was hugely underwhelming so now we just need to concentrate on what we can do over the coming months in the league.

With our small squad – as poor as it sounds – getting knocked out of the cups might prove to be a good thing, though that excuse looks very shoddy regarding the League Cup in particular.

Even so, our small squad clearly can’t hack the rigours of English football at all times, something we feared anyway, and so going back to one game a week may see our fortunes upturn.

We’re certainly hoping things improve defensively, too, as we’ve still looked very shaky at the back at times this season – something we could have fixed in January.

And so, as we move on, here are three defenders we just wish the Reds had gone after more over the past few weeks…

Joel Matip is almost like a new signing for us with him back from his injury but we could have done with another centre-half coming in.

Dejan Lovren is still inconsistent whilst Ragnar Klavan – though he has done well at times – is very limited in terms of what he can do. Joe Gomez is our only other option with Mama Sakho out of the frame and so signing Van Dijk would have been a top move.

How we still need a left back.

Kolasinac’s contract is gone at the end of this season with Schalke and so you’d have thought the club would have wanted to sell up for the right price before he leaves for free. That never came to pass, though, and so it remains to be seen if we go for him in the summer or not. Our guess is now the latter.

Hector wasn’t linked with the Reds for this window but we’d have still loved him to join the club.

James Milner has been brilliant – make no mistake – but we still need more players for that position, as we do in many areas of the pitch. Hector would have been a superb addition under Klopp as well as being able to free up Milner as another midfielder for us once again.
