£25m Ace Delighted to Get First Liverpool Goal

Georginio Wijnaldum says he is both happy and relieved to have scored his first Liverpool goal, following the Reds’ 6-1 win over Watford.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side romped to a 6-1 victory over the Hornets at Anfield, with Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham allowing Liverpool to go top of the Premier League for the first time in 30 months.

Wijnaldum was introduced as a second-half substitute, and he delivered the icing on the cake, finishing from close-range in the dying minutes.

The Dutchman was understood to be growing frustrated at not opening his account for the Reds, so he was unsurprisingly delighted after the game.

“I’m really pleased, especially in a game like this when you see everyone scoring,” Wijnaldum said< . “I was searching for the goal and I’m happy that I’ve got it.” Wijnaldum had previously set himself a target of 10 goals this season after his arrival from Newcastle United in the summer. Wijnaldum also discussed the superb current form of this Liverpool side, who are now unbeaten in 12 matches since losing at Burnley back in August.

The midfielder, who turns 26 on Friday, says simply being a part of Klopp’s team is a special experience.

“It’s a blessing for everyone in the dressing room that we can be a part of this team and this club,” he added.

“In situations and moments where it is going well, you enjoy football more than normal – and in this situation, we are enjoying football more than normal.

“We are scoring goals and playing good. Unfortunately, we could not keep another clean sheet, but we won and scored a lot of goals – that’s the most important thing.

“You enjoy playing in a team like this because it’s going well and you’re playing with good players. We want to keep the ball and score goals, and we’re trying to defend well. They are happy moments here in Liverpool.”

“The manager and the technical staff will do everything to keep it the same – we will work the same and play the same.

“We as players must realise that it is not common to be at the top of the league, so you must work hard – that’s what we’ve done, worked hard to get there.

“Now we will try to stay there until the end of the season because being at the top of the table at the end of the season is more important than it is now. It’s still early in the season, so everything can happen.”

It is hard to think of a time when there was such resounding positivity at Liverpool, with Klopp continuing to do a fantastic job as manager.

The German has the Reds playing some of their best football in recent memory, and with every victory that comes along, the more they are talked about as potential title-winners.

It is still early days, but not many would have expected such a strong start to the campaign by Liverpool, especially with the fixtures they had in August, September and October.
