We may still have two games left to play this year but before you know it the January transfer window will be upon us.
The Reds have been in fine form this season so far and beating Manchester City in four day’s time would be the perfect end to 2016 – but that is only going to be the precursor to a potentially huge 2017.
We really do have a chance of winning the league this season but many feel signing new players once the window opens is going to be pivotal to that.
For sure, whilst our first XI is as good as any in the division our squad needs some work and that’s why ESPN Brazil’s report that we could be in for Thiago Maia should be widely welcomed.
A talented Brazilian midfielder with plenty of time to improve, he could be Jurgen Klopp’s latest inspired signing and so, with that in mind, here are two reasons why we simply must bring him in…
GREAT ON THE BALL
The term ‘Rolls Royce’ midfielder gets banded around a lot in the modern game but here is a footballer that could just fulfill that description.
Maia strides around the pitch with the ball at his feet and looks very calm in possession as he keeps the ball close. He’s got a great eye for a pass and can take men on already, despite being only 19. That will only get better, then, and he’d surely be an asset for us to have as we try to control every game we’re in.
KLOPP’S GOT HISTORY
When unknown players used to get linked with us there was always a real sense of apprehension.
Indeed, you could see why with the likes of Antonio Nunez and Josemi boasting appearances for the club.
Now, though, with Jurgen Klopp, an unknown name is almost greeted with excitement thanks to his track record. The likes of Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus have come through under his supervision so we should trust that, if we sign Maia, he’d likely become a top player.
Santos have reportedly set a €40m transfer fee for Maia, which is obviously inflated, but as history shows, there are clubs out there who’ll pay that much for a teenager.
